Passport:
Students are responsible for ensuring that their passports are valid for their entire stay in France. U.S. passport fees are $110 (application fee) plus a $25 execution fee. Fees are $110 to renew your passport. For further information on renewing or obtaining a passport, please consult the U.S. Department of State passport website.
Visa Information:
All students wishing to pursue studies in France for more than 90 days must first register with Campus France (click on Required Steps on the CAMPUSFRANCE USA tab) in order to obtain a student visa. You must obtain your Student Visa while in the USA at the appropriate consulate. The visa cannot be issued once you are in France.
You are required to obtain an appointment on-line to apply for a visa.
The Consulate General of France in New York will issue biometric visas to comply with European Union directive 2004/512EC of June 9, 2004. The biometric system requires the scanning of ten fingers. Accordingly, all visa applicants, regardless of the type of visa sought, will be required from now on to appear in person at the Visa Section of the French Consulate.
International students (other than European Union nationals) residing in France for more than three months must obtain a "student" residence permit (which is distinct from a visa), within two months of your arrival in France, you may not apply more than 90 days prior to your departure.
Applications by mail are not accepted.
All incomplete applications will be kept on file at the consulate until the missing documents are presented. Processing will begin only once the application is complete. The consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant. Submitting the following documents, while required, does not guarantee issuance of a visa.
Requirements:
- Application form for Long Stay Visa (http://www.consulfrance-newyork.org/IMG/pdf/visalon.pdf) and one photo. The form must be completely and legibly filled out in black or blue ink, signed, and dated. The photo must be recent and passport size —2" x 2" (4,5cm x 4,5cm) —and show full-face front view, (forehead, hairline, and ears visible) on a white/light background. We recommend having several identical passport size photos available as you may need them for other applications.
- Passport or travel document valid for at least three months following the last day of your stay in France (+ one copy of identity page). Be sure the passport has blank visa pages left to affix the visa.
- For non-U.S. citizens, a U.S. residency card (Green Card) or I-551 stamp, or a valid U.S. visa with I-94 and IAP66 or I-20, where applicable, or an Advanced Parole, which must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the last day in France.
- Proof of your student status: Student Identification card or attestation from your school or university in the U.S. (+ one copy of identity page).
Please submit the following documents in original and one copy per applicant:
Note: The Visa Section does not make any copies, you must bring your documents and the required copies when you enter or you will have to re-join the lines.
- Flight reservation: Complete itinerary or round trip ticket with confirmed dates. No open tickets accepted. Do not purchase tickets until the visa has been approved.
- Letter of inscription in a school/university in France, specifying exact dates of attendance.
- Proof of accommodation: A letter from the school stating that you will be staying on campus or in student housing provided by the school, with an address.
- Financial guarantee: Notarized letter with the provider’s exact name and relation to student, personal address, and telephone number, certifying that the applicant will be granted a monthly allowance of at least 600US$ for the duration of his/her stay in France. A copy of the provider’s personal bank statement or the Financial Guarantee Form must be attached, (this provider cannot be the school).
- Medical insurance: A letter from your insurance (+ one copy) company stating that you will be covered for at least $45,000 during your stay in Europe. This letter must specifically indicate the coverage for any medical, hospitalization, and repatriation expenses. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you must find an international insurance. Warning: Failure to provide this document will delay the granting of your visa.
- Application fee: €99.00. The exchange rate that applies is the one in effect on the day the visa application is submitted. See http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic for current exchange rate.
