    		<title>Windows 7 Migration</title>
    		<link>http://wws.princeton.edu/news/viewstory.xml?id=3290</link>
    		<description>To All Staff Members,

Last month, OIT released a Windows 7 DeSC image and WWS Computing Services has already started to deploy the new operating system.

The School has approximately one hundred visitors arriving over the summer and all of their machines need to be configured by the start of the new semester. Due to the timing of the image release, all visitor machines will be configured with Windows 7. Unfortunately, we will not be able to start reconfiguring faculty and staff machines until late in the fall. The image process takes approximately four hours. In the case of full time faculty and staff, additional time is required to move data files and the migration needs to be coordinated with work schedules. We expect the project to last 24 months.

The differences between Vista and Windows 7 are minor and most Windows users will have no trouble adjusting. However, there are significant changes in MS Office (2010). To prepare for the mixed environment, several resources are available:

Instructor Led Training in Robertson Hall on August 2nd and August 23rd – www.princeton.edu/training

iLinc tutorial - https://www.princeton.edu/pulse/tutorial-library/outlook/index.xml

Online training via lynda.com - http://helpdesk.princeton.edu/kb/display.plx?ID=1060

Office 2010 Quick Reference Guide - hard copy available via the WWS Help Desk

WWS Help Desk – questions answered by emailing wwshelp@princeton.edu or calling 8-1773.

All staff are encouraged to utilize the resources above and take advantage of the instructor led MS Office training that will be conducted in Robertson Hall.

Please contact the WWS Help Desk (wwshelp@princeton.edu or 258-1773) if you have any questions or concerns.

<description>Tavel - Boarding passes are no longer required to be submitted with your travel voucher. However, we still require the original transportation invoice indicating the name of traveler, trip routing, and price of ticket along with proof of payment.

Business Meal - business meal reimbursements must state the nature of business and the names of those in attendance. If a group was in attendance, rather than lisiting individual names, you may provide the name of the group and the number of people in the group attending, such as WWS Dean&#39;s Advisory Council (12). Vouchers received without this information will be returned to the preparer for completion. </description>

Subject: McAfee Scheduled Scan: Windows Desktops w/VirusScan - Start Date: 3/21/2010

Dear SCAD/DCS Members:

OIT has implemented McAfee scheduled scans for all institutional Windows desktops used by faculty and staff. The scans will begin at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2010, and will continue to scan computers weekly each Sunday. All Windows desktop computers with McAfee VirusScan are scheduled to participate. The decision to implement full system scanning was made due to the security issues involved with computers that do not scan, search and remove malware. Users who log into the computer during that time should experience minimal performance issues.

McAfee software actively scans files that are opened, uploaded and downloaded with the most up-to-date virus definitions, yet sometimes a new virus can be downloaded before McAfee has a definition for it. Performing a full scan of a computer with up-to-date definitions is the only way malware can be detected and deleted once the computer has become infected.

To send a request for a machine to “opt-out” of this service, use the form at: https://oitforms.princeton.edu/SS/scanexclude. Please consider this option carefully as it is not recommended. The only way to fully protect a computer against malware is to scan the hard disk on a periodic basis.

For more information, see www.princeton.edu/antivirus. Please contact the OIT Help Desk at helpdesk@princeton.edu if you have any questions.
