M.P.A.-U.R.P. ’05

Bank Examiner, Federal Reserve Bank of New York,
New York, N.Y.

Maria Rodriguez

Maria Rodriguez wanted a career that would combine economics with public policy. She was attracted to the School’s high standards of excellence and its strong economics track combined with public policy training, giving her the ability to earn a dual master’s degree (M.P.A.-U.R.P.) in two years.

“Having had an economics background, I was pleased to go back to learn how to apply the policy perspective rather than just looking at the financial bottom line in decision making.”

While at WWS, Maria performed her required summer internship with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Bank Supervision Group, Legal, and Compliance Risk Department. At the conclusion of that internship, she was offered a permanent position in the same office. After considering other options, she chose to return there.

Concentrating in the economics and public policy field has been beneficial to her career in a number of ways. “I have worked these past two years as a financial analyst for the federal government and have since modified my regulatory/supervisory role to focus on anti-money laundering and terrorist financing activities. This new area will lean more into the international public policy side of the business that our banks and governments do on a daily basis—and how best to oversee it for the sake of our economy.”

Maria describes her overall experience at the School as “near perfect.” “It was incredibly challenging on many levels, both academically and spiritually, but was really worth it. I was able to learn so much about myself and my classmates and the importance of the desire to make a commitment to public service and the change it can make.”
