DAVID H. MCCORMICK

M.P.A. ’94, Ph.D. ’96

Undersecretary of International Affairs, U.S. Department of the Treasury
Washington, D.C.

David H. McCormick

David McCormick was appointed Undersecretary of International Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Treasury and confirmed by the Senate on August 1, 2007, having previously served as Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs at the National Security Council. There, he played a central role in advancing the President's international economic agenda of opening markets, and promoting global growth, prosperity, and development.

He credits much of his success to the School’s M.P.A. program and the caliber of his professors, which he believes provided him a strong foundation for his career in business as well as government. “Professor Emeritus Richard Ullman, who taught several classes on foreign policy and international affairs, had a profound effect on my ability to think and write.”

David had a strong interest in public policy and public service and was attracted to the M.P.A program because of its relative size. “The intimacy of the WWS experience was a key factor. Both the M.P.A. and Ph.D. programs are small enough where you can get to know your fellow students and professors and feel like a real part of the community. I also had a sense that the international affairs focus and the emphasis on economics and statistics was stronger at WWS than in other programs.”

He previously served as Undersecretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, leading the bureau in the advancement U.S. foreign policy, national security, and economic objectives through effective policies for technology controls, treaty compliance, and continued U.S. leadership in strategic industries. He oversaw a bureau with global policymaking, regulatory, and law enforcement responsibilities with offices in China, India, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and throughout the United States. He is a former Army officer and a veteran of the first Gulf War.
