McLanahan is the coauthor of Fathers under Fire; Social Policies for Children; Growing Up with a Single Parent; Child Support and Child Well-Being; and Single Mothers and Their Children: A New American Dilemma. She has served on the boards of the American Sociological Association and the Population Association of America and is currently a member of the board on Families, Youth, and Children of the National Academy of Sciences. An associate of the Office of Population Research, her research interests include family demography, stratification, and social policy. She teaches courses on poverty and family policy.
