Vali Nasr, Sr. Advisor to Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, to Speak December 8

Vali Nasr, Professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University, will present a public talk titled, "Economics versus Extremism: The New Muslim Middle Class and Ideological Shift in the Muslim World," at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, in Bowl 016, Robertson Hall.

Vali Nasr, a specialist on political and social developments in the Muslim world, is a Senior Advisor to Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan for the U.S. State Department. He was previously a Senior Fellow with the Dubai Initiative at the Belfer Center, Harvard University; a professor and Chair of Research at the Department of National Security Affairs, Naval Postgraduate School, in Monterey, CA (2003 to 2007); an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (2006-2009); and Director of the Islamic Educational Reform in South Asia Project of the National Bureau of Asian Research (2005-2007).

Nasr is the author of several books, most recently, Forces of Fortune: The Rise of the New Muslim Middle Class and What it Will Means for Our World (Free Press, 2009); The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam will Shape the Future (W.W. Norton, 2006) and Democracy in Iran: History and the Quest for Liberty (Oxford University Press, 2006).

He has written numerous articles in academic journals, edited volumes and encyclopedias, as well as The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The New Republic, Foreign Policy, Time, Newsweek, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. He is an editor of Oxford Dictionary of Islam. His works have been translated into several languages.

Nasr has advised senior policymakers and senior members of the Congress. He also provides frequent expert commentary and made guest appearances on CNN, BBC, National Public Radio, Newshour with Jim Lehrer, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, Frontline, Larry King Live, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Charlie Rose Show and Meet the Press.
