Beyond the Doctor’s Office: Improving Health Outcomes in the U.S. through Non-Medical Services
The Princeton Seminar on Global Health will convene a panel of experts to discuss innovative solutions for delivering healthcare to underserved populations in the US. The panelists will address social determinants of health, exploring how non-medical “wrap-around” services such as psychosocial support, food banks, housing assistance and child care can be leveraged to expand access to health care. Panelists Heather Howard, Director of the State Health Reform Assistance Network and Lecturer at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School; Terri Jackson, Senior Vice President of Rabin Martin and Patricia Doykos, Director of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation bring a diverse wealth of expertise from government, academia, NGOs and the private sector to the healthcare discussion.

Heather Howard, Director, State Health Reform Assistance Network; Lecturer, Woodrow Wilson School
Heather Howard is the Director of the State Health Reform Assistance Network (State Network), a program housed within the Center for Health and Wellbeing (CHW) that provides technical assistance to states in order to maximize coverage expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She is also a lecturer in public affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School (WWS) and a faculty affiliate at CHW. Howard brings a wealth of experience in both federal and state government to the State Network and the WWS. She most recently served as the commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Health and Senior Services, a cabinet level agency with a budget of approximately $3.5 billion. There she was responsible for oversight of public health services, regulation of health care institutions, hospital financing, senior services and health care policy and research. Her prior public policy experience includes work in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the Domestic Policy Council at the White House, and the Health Care Task Force within the Antitrust Division at the U.S. Justice Department. Howard received a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and a J.D. from New York University School of Law.
Terri Jackson, Senior Vice President at Rabin Martin
Terri brings an advocate’s passion and evaluator’s rigor to the challenges of increasing health care quality and equity, drawing on an innate know-how born from two decades of experience providing direct services for vulnerable populations in the U.S.
Throughout her career, Terri has been at the forefront of local and national programs in and policies for HIV prevention and care, sexual and reproductive health, substance abuse prevention and mental health. She specializes in, program development, strategic planning, and monitoring and evaluation for efforts to improve access to health for hard-to-reach communities, developing, designing and implementing domestic health programs, managing and scaling-up qualitative and quantitative research projects, including monitoring and evaluation to improve performance and patient care, developing effective and sustainable public-private partnerships.
At Rabin Martin, Terri helped lead the development of bridge2care.com, a training resource to improve the skills of HIV care providers in serving at-risk patients. Previously, as Vice President of Access to Care for Housing Works, Terri developed integrated care initiatives for HIV-positive individuals. At the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, she oversaw service integration and health informatics. For Planned Parenthood of New York, Terri led programs for under-served communities, facilitated the integration of HIV testing into clinic visits and improved data collection and analysis.
Terri was recently elected to serve on the board of the Public Health Association of New York City.
Patricia Doykos, Director, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation
Patricia Mae Doykos is Director of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. Dr. Doykos works on health strategy for the Foundation and leads the flagship philanthropic program, Together on Diabetes®: Communities Uniting to Meet America’s Diabetes Challenge which was launched in November 2010 to improve health outcomes of adults in the U.S. living with type 2 diabetes by strengthening patient self-management education, community-based supportive services and broad-based community mobilization. Dr. Doykos joined the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation in 2002 and has also developed and led U.S. and international grant making and partnership programs for women’s health, global HIV/AIDS, cancer, and serious mental illness.

The event will be held in Robertson Hall, located at the intersection of Washington Road and Prospect Avenue.

Before 5pm , metered parking is available on Prospect Avenue, William Street and Olden Street. Please check meters for maximum time limits; some of the meters on Prospect Avenue have a two-hour limit, and tickets are issued for meter-feeding in those spots.
If no metered parking spots are available, free parking is available in two visitor lots on campus. Because these lots are located relatively far from the event location, extra time must be allowed for either walking or taking the campus shuttle to Robertson Hall.
After 5pm, visitors may park in most of the University's numbered parking lots, including Lot 21 and West Garage. Lots 10 and 13 on William Street are the most convenient to Robertson Hall. See the visitor parking map for details.
