Peter Orszag, Former OMB Director, to discuss "Health Care Reform and Our Fiscal Future," November 10

Peter Orszag '91, former director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Barack Obama and a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, will present a public talk titled "Health Care Reform and Our Fiscal Future" at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10, in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.

Orszag’s talk is the third in a series of lectures titled “Implementing Healthcare Reform,” which is co-sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School and the Center for Health and Wellbeing.

Orszag served as director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Barack Obama helping to shape the 2009 stimulus package and health care legislation that passed in early 2010. He was also director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) from January 18, 2007 to November 25, 2008.

He is a contributing columnist for The New York Times and will also be writing at nytimes.com/opinionator. Before joining the CBO, Orszag was the Joseph A. Pechman Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution. While at Brookings, he also served as Director of The Hamilton Project, which provides a platform for scholars to offer proposals for promoting broad-based economic growth; Director of the Retirement Security Project, which focuses on promoting retirement security; and co-director of the Tax Policy Center, a joint venture with the Urban Institute providing analysis of tax issues.

In previous government service during 1997 and 1998, Orszag served as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Senior Economic Adviser at the National Economic Council. In 1995 and 1996, he was Senior Adviser and Senior Economist at the President's Council of Economic Advisers. His first appointment with the Council was as a staff economist in 1993 and 1994.

The Implementing Healthcare Reform series, co-sponsored with the Center for Health and Wellbeing, is one of five new thematic lecture series that includes Financial Market Regulation; Intractable Conflicts; Race and Public Policy; and Changing Notions of State, Sovereignty, and Self-Determination (co-sponsored with The Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination as part of its10th anniversary). Each series will feature four to six lectures and/or panel discussions that convene noted scholars, diplomats, think tank, public policy and government officials to discuss pressing policy issues.
