"Derivatives: 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' or Generators of Market Stability?" -- Subject of Lowenstein and Tett talk, October 11

Roger Lowenstein, financial journalist and former Wall Street Journal columnist, and Gillian Tett, U.S. managing editor and an assistant editor of the Financial Times, will participate in a public discussion titled, "Derivatives: 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' or Generators of Market Stability?" at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, October 11, 2010, in Bowl 016, Robertson Hall. Their talk is part of the School's new "Financial Market Regulation" series. Jon Corzine, the John L. Weinberg/Goldman Sachs & Co. Visiting Professor at the Woodrow Wilson School and former New Jersey governor and U.S. senator, will moderate the discussion.

Lowenstein reported for the Wall Street Journal for more than a decade, writing its stock market column "Heard on the Street" from 1989 to 1991. He has published five books, including the bestselling Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist and co-authored one. He currently writes for Bloomberg News and Smart Money magazine, and has written for The New York Times and The New Republic, among other publications.

Tett is U.S. managing editor and an assistant editor of the Financial Times. In her previous role, she oversaw global coverage of the financial markets. In 2009 she was named Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards. In that same year her book Fool’s Gold won Financial Book of the Year at the inaugural Spear’s Book Awards. In 2007 Tett was awarded the Wincott prize for her capital markets coverage. She was named British Business Journalist of the Year in 2008. Tett is also the author of Saving the Sun; How Wall Street Mavericks Shook up Japan’s Financial System and Made Billions (Harper Collins and Random House).

The Financial Market Regulation series is one of five new thematic lecture series that includes Race and Public Policy; Intractable Conflicts; Implementing Healthcare Reform (co-sponsored with the School’s Center for Health and Wellbeing); and Changing Notions of State, Sovereignty, and Self-Determination (co-sponsored with The Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination as part of their 10th anniversary). Each series will feature four to six lectures and/or panel discussions that will convene noted scholars, diplomats, think tank, public policy and government officials to discuss pressing policy issues.
