Breaking the cycle of long-term unemployment requires not only effective federal and state policies but an examination of who is most affected and how this data is best measured.

A policy forum at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs will gather policymakers, academics and students to address these issues Friday, April 15, 2016, 1-5 p.m., Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall (located on the corner of Washington Road and Prospect Street in Princeton, New Jersey.)

The forum, “Breaking the Cycle of Unemployment,” is free and public, but registration is required.

Keynote speeches will be delivered by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, (D-NJ, 12th District, U.S. House of Representatives) and Alan Krueger, the Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Policy and director of the Survey Research Center at Princeton. Patricia L. Cohen MPA ’86, a reporter at The New York Times, will moderate the panel discussions.

Watson Coleman—who is the first African American woman to represent New Jersey in Congress—is a longtime and influential advocate for the people of New Jersey. She has fought on the front lines to improve the lives of working families, supporting increase in the minimum wage and sponsoring legislation that created New Jersey’s first energy efficiency standards. She also authored legislation creating New Jersey’s Office of the Comptroller in an effort to battle waste, fraud and abuse in government spending.

Krueger is a widely recognized economist, ranked among the 50 highest ranked economists in the world. In addition to his work at Princeton, he has served as the U.S. assistant secretary of the treasury for economic policy and as the chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He developed and applied special experimental methods to study the effect of education on earnings and the minimum wage on employment, among other issues. Krueger has published widely on the economics of unemployment, education, terrorism, labor demand, income distribution, social insurance, labor market regulation and environmental economics.
