The Euro Crisis: Challenges and Opportunities

Axel Weber, the former president, Deutsche Bundesbank, and incoming chairman of UBS presented a public talk on October 12, 2011, titled, “The European Debt Crisis: Challenges and Opportunities.” The event was co-sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance. It was the first in a series of lectures focusing on “Economic Recovery: Perils, Politics and Possibilities.” Weber was the president of the Deutsche Bundesbank and a member of the governing council of the European Central Bank between 2004 and 2011. He was recently appointed to the board of the Swiss banking giant UBS starting in May, 2012, and will become chairman in 2013. Weber previously served as a member of the steering committees of the European Systemic Risk Board and the Financial Stability Board. In addition, he served as the German governor of the International Monetary Fund, as a member of the board of directors of the Bank for International Settlements, and as a member of the G7 and the G20 ministers and governors.
