Graduate Program

Our programs, the Master in Public Affairs (M.P.A) , Master in Public Policy (M.P.P.) , and Doctor of Philosophy in Public Affairs (Ph.D.), are designed to prepare students to deal with complex public policy problems. Students are taught sophisticated techniques applicable in management and analysis. The School teaches individuals to create, implement, analyze, and interpret public policy in both the domestic and international arenas.
Some students want to combine the study of public policy with the study of a related discipline. To accommodate these students, the Woodrow Wilson School offers a joint degree program, the Master in Public Affairs/Juris Doctor (M.P.A./J.D.). Also, for a limited number of candidates, the School may permit joint degrees in such disciplines as natural or applied sciences, business, environmental planning, and public health with the cooperation of other institutions or other Princeton departments outside the social sciences. Students interested in pursuing one of these options must submit in writing an academic rationale for the particular program proposed. Joint programs ordinarily shorten by two semesters the length of time it would take to complete the two degrees separately.
Students may also want to combine the study of public policy with a specific area of expertise. To accommodate these students, the Woodrow Wilson School offers five nondegree certificate programs -- Demography (OPR), Health and Health Policy (HHP), Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy (STEP), Urban Policy (UP) and Urban Policy and Planning (UPP). Students interested in pursuing one of these options must submit in writing an academic rationale for the particular certificate proposed. Certificate programs are completed within the length of time it would take to complete either the M.P.A. or M.P.P. programs.
