Navy SEAL, Losey, to discuss public policy and special operations, Sept. 23
Brian Losey, Captain, United States Navy, Director for Combating Terrorism, Directorate of Combating Terrorism, National Security Council, will present a public talk titled "Effectiveness in Public Policy-- -a Special Operations Perspective," at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, in Bowl 016, Robertson Hall, on the Princeton University campus.
Losey began his National Security Council assignment as a Director for Combating Terrorism in 2007. His policy portfolios include Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism, Maritime Security, Hostages, and Special Operations.
Captain Losey was commissioned in the Navy upon graduation from the United States Air Force Academy in 1983. He completed training with Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Class 126 in January 1984.
From June 2004 to July 2007, he commanded a Naval Special Warfare Group and completed multiple deployments to command Joint/Combined Special Operations Task Forces in Afghanistan. From 2001 to 2003, while in command of a SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team (combatant submersibles), he was deployed as a Naval Component Commander to Joint/Combined Special Operations Task Forces in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Additionally, he served as the Deputy Director for Operations to Special Operations Command, Central, where he was responsible for the planning and coordination of operations for over 16,000 U.S. and Coalition special operations personnel in three task forces during the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Other assignments have included a range of operational, staff and command duties in SEAL Teams, SEAL Delivery Vehicle Teams, Special Boats Units, the Joint Special Operations Command and the U.S. Seventh Fleet Staff in the Pacific. He has deployed on contingency or named operations to Panama, El Salvador, Somalia, Haiti, the Balkans, and in the Pacific Rim. He deployed extensively to remote areas in the Amazon Basin.
Captain Losey holds a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, the College of Air Command and Staff, and the Defense Language Institute (Spanish).
