Mirna Galic earned an M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School in 2007, concentrating in Field I (International Relations). She currently serves as an associate expert at the United Nations. “I function as the special advisor for counter-terrorism to the Assistant-Secretary-General for Policy Planning,” Galic told the School’s Office of External Affairs as part of a video feature.

Speaking of her time in the M.P.A. program at WWS, Galic said “the School served as a very good springboard for me. In the past I would have certainly looked at the United Nations, for example, as a place where I would love to work, but never would have imagined that I could work.

But, she noted, “being at the school for two years and taking that time after I had already done some work experience - to really re-focus myself and figure out what directions I wanted to go in - was very helpful to have that two years as a time to really introspect, and to look at the other possibilities that I had around me."  When coming out of graduate school, she said, “you’re sort of starting fresh and you have 360 degrees of possibility - and for me, because I was studying IR, and because I had studied some of the international cooperation issues in some of my classes and really wanted to stay focused on security, this particular job was a really good mix of those things.

“But also I think because the School has an international character, it sort of opened my eyes that you can do public service not just at a national level  - but you can do it really in an international sphere, and that’s something  that I would like to pursue down the line some more.”
