I am retiring in early 2014 after a 40-year career in finance, including senior roles across both the private and public sectors in global and domestic markets. In each case I have encountered the forces of crisis, innovation, growth and change. These roles include: Chief Financial Officer of Capital One Financial Corporation (2003-2013); Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of the World Bank (1996-2003); and Sr. Vice President – Finance and Treasurer of Fannie Mae (1985-1993). A principal focus of each role has been to facilitate socially valuable investment that also generates competitive returns, which is necessary to the promotion of sustainable and broad-based growth. Armed with my WWS training, I have had to communicate complex messages in simple but credible language, to establish trusting relationships with business leaders and policymakers, and to forge meaningful consensus among a variety of constituencies.
