Thomas (Tom) Bell

Tom has served Her Majesty’s Government since 2005 in a number of roles having to do with security and counter terrorism. He spent his summer travelling around Eastern Europe so that he could arrive for the program fully relaxed. Upon completion of his MPP he will return to his native London to continue his career, play football (soccer), and sit in pubs.

Aaron has spent the past 15 years working on environmental and human development challenges in more than a dozen countries around the world. His work focuses on making conservation a viable development option by building ecosystem services and markets for those services into decision-making. He doesn’t mind the necessary time spent behind a desk and at conferences, but the most rewarding part of the job is field work, including a year in the forest in Northern Ecuador working with Indigenous communities on alternatives to unsustainable logging. He left his job at the end of May and spent the summer swimming with his kids and taking long walks with his dog. After graduation, he plans to return to work in international conservation armed with a much stronger set of technical skills.

Arvind received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and his dissertation focused on systems biology approaches to infectious disease. Most recently, he has worked as a postdoctoral fellow also at the University of Virginia. Over the course of his study on infectious diseases, he became interested in the bigger global health picture that spans from science to medicine, access, delivery, and public policy. While at WWS, he wishes to explore his interests in global health and international development. After graduation, Arvind hopes to pursue a career in global health from both science and policy perspectives.

Carol just finished her third year at Vanderbilt Medical School. She sits on the board of directors of Doctors for America, a 15,000 physician member nonprofit organization whose aim is to promote advocacy among physicians and to improve the health of the nation. At Vanderbilt, she served as chapter president of the American Medical Women’s Association, winning the National Heller Award of Excellence during her tenure. Her research at Vanderbilt examines admission criteria for febrile infants and how the ability to ensure follow-up affects admission rates. Her writing has been published in the The New Physician, the Star Ledger, and The Vanderbilt Health Law & Public Policy Forum. During the 2008 election, she served as State Director for the Obama for America Health Policy Committee Speechwriting Team.  Carol likes sailing, shoes, and has performed three times in the Vagina Monologues. She plans to be a pediatrician.

Due to her father’s job, Trina grew up in Tokyo, Manila, and San Francisco. After graduating from the International School of Manila, she earned her BA in International Relations from Scripps College, and MA in Political Science from the University of Hawaii. After graduate school, she was accepted into the Executive Fellowship Program, an experiential learning program in California State Government. What began as a year in Sacramento became sixteen years of working in State Government and on a variety of policy issues. Trina has been Deputy Director for Pollution Prevention and Green Technology at the Department of Toxic Substances Control, Assistant Secretary for Public Health, Emergency Medical Services, and Federal Stimulus Implementation at the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Special Assistant to the Secretary at HHSA, and Policy Analyst at the Department of Food and Agriculture. In addition to her government experience, she was a Principal Consultant and Co-Founder of Third Sector Strategies, a program development and grant writing consulting firm, and Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator at Sacramento State University. After Princeton, Trina hopes to work on health policy in Washington DC. She enjoys travel, cooking, and all kinds of food and wine, and is looking forward to living on the East Coast.
 
Douglas (Doug) Greco

Doug has organized with the Industrial Areas Foundation for the past ten years in Austin and San Antonio. Working with coalitions of religious congregations, schools, and unions in both cities, his experience has been in helping these organizations to build political power in predominantly working class and low-income communities to address issues such as education, living wages, adult workforce development, safe neighborhoods, affordable housing, and immigration. Before that Doug taught high school in Austin for five years. His interests include fiction writing, reading, spending time with family and friends, and traveling to any city!
 
Richard (Rich) Hinman

Rich is a career Foreign Service Officer with the US State Department. He joined the Foreign Service in 2002 and he has previously served in the Czech Republic, India, and Jordan. Most recently, he had been in the political section in Amman during the twists and turns of the Arab Spring. Prior to joining the State Department, he was an Officer in the United States Army and a Special Agent in the US Secret Service. Rich’s military service included extensive service in infantry and special operations units. He served in Operations JUST CAUSE, DESERT STORM, and IRAQI FREEDOM. He worked for the US Secret Service in the New York and New Jersey areas. He worked primarily on transnational organized crime cases prior to serving on the 9/11 recovery effort and criminal investigation in the New York area. Rich participated in law enforcement operations in Colombia, Kosovo, El Salvador, Canada, and the UK. He lived in Boston, New York, and Washington DC in his youth and has been married to Ms. Gia Hinman for over 24 years. They have two children, Richard Jr. (20), and Rose (18). 
 
Shaun Kim

Shaun is an Associate with the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton based out of Mclean, VA. Over the last ten years, she has supported clients in the US Department of Defense and held overseas assignments in the Republic of Korea and Hawaii in support of US Combatant and Sub-unified Commands. She was a 2011 National Finalist for the White House Fellows program and served on the Foreign Policy Team for the Jon Huntsman 2012 Presidential campaign. She studied Political Science at Wellesley College, hails from the Windy City, and enjoys playing scoreless rounds of golf in her spare time.

Anne most recently spent four years as an attorney advisor in the Office of General Counsel at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC. She advised employees and program offices on questions relating to government ethics, the Federal Advisory Committee Act, and other aspects of agency administration. Her interest in shaping public policy began with a college paralegal job at the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project and grew during her service as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic. Upon returning to the US she was a policy analyst for the Mayor’s Office of Operations in New York City. During and after law school she worked for the Inter-American Foundation, an independent government agency that provides grants to grassroots organizations in Latin America. She plans to use her studies at WWS to synthesize her international and domestic policy interests. Anne is a native Princetonian and an avid swing dancer.

Major Lisa Mabbutt has been an officer in the United States Air Force for 12 years. As an Air Force Civil Engineer, she has planned, programmed, and overseen the operations and maintenance of military installations and tactical infrastructure worldwide, and comes to the Woo from the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force where she was a legislative liaison to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees. While she has enjoyed each assignment, Lisa’s most rewarding work has been in the deployed environment where, as an engineer, she and her Airmen can see the immediate impact of their work on joint US and Coalition forces, on the mission, and on the local populace. After graduation, she hopes to command a squadron, where she’ll try to share some of the perspective she gains at Princeton to continue to mentor and lead young Airmen.
 
Christopher (Chris) Minns

Chris is the Assistant Secretary of the Labor Party in Sydney, the largest and oldest political party in Australia. He joined Labor at 17 and since then has been involved at many levels of the party including as President of Young Labor. He is the former Chief of Staff to the Minister for Energy and the Environment. Prior to politics he worked in the charity sector, for the Fire Brigade, and also as the Deputy Mayor of Hurstville in Australia. He is interested in reading and Rugby, and spends most of his spare time chasing after his two sons, Joe and Nicky (who have never had a cold Christmas). Chris will return to Sydney after Princeton to put his new skills to work.
 
Elaine Pearson

Elaine is originally from Australia, but her passion for far-flung lands and social justice has seen her living all over the globe. Since 2007 she has been the Deputy Asia Director at Human Rights Watch based in New York. Prior to that she lived and worked in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kathmandu, and London for various UN posts, humanitarian agencies, and non-profit organizations. Elaine started the first Trafficking Program at Anti-Slavery International.  Elaine has worked extensively on human trafficking and migration issues, but now covers abuses in armed conflict, freedom of expression, and various human rights issues across Asia. She writes frequently for numerous publications and her articles have appeared in the Guardian, the Wall St. Journal, and Human Rights Quarterly. After Princeton, Elaine plans to return to Human Rights Watch.
 
Jon Piechowski

Jon is originally from the great city of Chicago, where he lived most of his life before entering the U.S. Foreign Service in 2003.  Since then, he has served in Cairo, Baghdad, and Paris, and he spent two years working as a Special Assistant for Secretaries of State Rice and Clinton.  In this capacity, he supported the Secretaries' foreign travel, setting up meetings, press conferences, and town halls all over the world, and he coordinated the preparation of briefing materials for dozens of meetings.  He recently completed a two-year assignment in Haiti as embassy spokesman and head of public diplomacy, and he is at Princeton with his wife and daughter.

Ryan is a SEAL and prior Surface Warfare Officer with Special Operations, Fleet and Joint Warfare experience having received a commission through the Navy ROTC program upon graduation from Georgetown University in 1997. He has spent the majority of his career based out of San Diego and Hawaii with multiple deployments to Iraq, the Arabian Gulf, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America, and comes to Princeton following a deployment to Afghanistan. Following graduation Ryan anticipates applying his experience in the Woodrow Wilson School to future Special Operations military service in an increasingly complex global security environment.

Joan is a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Coast Guard and received her commission as an officer upon graduation from the US Coast Guard Academy in 2001. She has primarily served at Coast Guard Air Stations piloting the H-65 helicopter. Throughout her career she executed numerous search and rescue cases, illegal human smuggling interdictions, and fisheries law enforcement cases. After Princeton, Joan anticipates future positions in policy evaluation and resource management within the Coast Guard.

Gemma Stevenson

Gemma has supported Governments in the UK, India, and Afghanistan to improve the business operating environment and promote private sector growth. She has recently returned from four years in the Afghan capital where she was embedded in the Ministry for Commerce and Industry under a British Government funded programme. After Princeton, she plans to continue working in the developing world, with the longer term aim of strengthening the links between the UK’s portfolios for international development and business and commerce. Originally a linguist, Gemma embraces learning new languages and has been known for her pedantry when it comes to grammar. She also enjoys London cycling, home baking, and sampling fine ales.

Before working as a SE Asia advisor for the US Army, Tom lived an itinerant lifestyle flying helicopters. His wife Veronica, and two children Eva (3), and Sam (newborn), are looking forward to New Jersey after languishing in Hawaii for three years. Upon graduation, they anticipate assignment somewhere south of China, east of India.
 
Joseph Zachary (Zach) Vertin

Zach comes to WWS after six years with the International Crisis Group. He most recently served as Senior Analyst in Sudan/South Sudan, where he led the organization’s research and political analysis amid the country’s fragile post-war transition and subsequent partition. He authored widely-read policy reports on the political transition in Juba, contentious North-South negotiations, regional security politics, inter-ethnic conflict, the politics of oil, and the evolution of Chinese foreign policy in the two Sudans. He conducted regular briefings and advocacy in global policy centers, and contributed widely to television, print, radio, and online media. Zach previously worked in Crisis Group’s New York office, where he was involved in a range of UN policy issues with a focus on Security Council dynamics and African issues.  At WWS, he is looking forward to extracting lessons from these two very different settings and applying them to future work in the Horn and beyond. Prior to arriving in New Jersey he attempted to ride his bike up as many hills as possible in Northern California. Zach is a fiercely proud Minnesotan and visits often.
